How does Scratch and Dent Insurance work?

Sometimes referred to as SMART Insurance, this cover will pay for small cosmetic repairs such as stone chips, scratches, small dents, scrapes and scuffs. Unlike your motor insurance, making a claim on this policy will not affect your No Claims Bonus or impact on your insurance claim record”. This insurance is only available for vehicles supplied by a franchised (main agent) motor dealer or leasing company.

Scratch and Dent Insurance is sometimes referred to as SMART Insurance.

It is an insurance product designed to help maintain the appearance and value of your vehicle without the need to make claims on your motor insurance.

Making a claim on your fully comprehensive motor insurance for Screen Shot 2015-09-13 at 22.03.15minor cosmetic repairs would damage your insurance claim record and ultimately increase your premiums in future.  It may also cost you an insurance excess payment.  No matter how carefully you drive or how considerately you park – all vehicles are likely to suffer scratches, dents and chips. If left unattended, this type of small damage can quickly deteriorate and cause corrosion and paint departure.

 

Example

John notices a scratch on his nearside front wing whilst cleaning his car. John checks his Scratch and Dent policy Terms and Conditions and it appears this accidental damage will be covered. In preparation for making his claim, John takes a digital photograph of the damage.

John calls the claims team and makes his claim. The claims team ask John to email the digital image – and they agree, it appears to be a valid claim. John pays his excess of £10 knowing it will be returned if for any reason the repair does not proceed.

The claims team contact their approved repairer, who in turn call John and make arrangements to visit at his home or place of work to assess and carry out the repair.

The repairer arrives as arranged and reports to the claims team that this is indeed a valid claim and cosmetically repairable damage. The claims team authorise the repair and two hours later – John’s car is looking as it did before the damage occurred.

The repairer charge the claims team directly and John has only had to pay a nominal £10 excess.

Why not consider Scratch and Dent Insurance?.

This cover provides up to 3 claims per year to meet the cost of small cosmetic repairs to your vehicle bodywork. There is no monetary limit to each claim or the total value of claims. Repairs are carried out at your home or place of work and all repairs are covered by a 2 year guarantee. The insurers current approved repairer is an organisation called ‘Revive’, designated as an Approved Centre by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Awards. Minor cosmetic damage is common and can be expensive to repair.

This insurance will pay for accidental minor cosmetic damage repairs such as;

  • Dents not exceeding 150mm in diameter on a single panel,
  • Scratches and scuffs not exceeding 150mm in diameter and 3mm in depth on a single panel,
  • Stone chips each not exceeding 150mm in diameter and 3mm in depth,

The insurer limits the size of damage to ensure repairs are unlikely to be detected by casual examination by an untrained eye. Damage larger than the areas stated above have been proven to be better and more satisfactorily repaired by a fully equipped bodyshop and as such are not covered by this policy. Up to 3 bodywork claims per annum are covered by this insurance.

A £10 per claim policy excess will apply.

  • 100% premium refund if policy is cancelled within 30 day cooling off period, provided you have not made a claim and;
  • Pro rata refund of unused premium less a £20 cancellation fee after the 30 day cooling off period – provided you have not made a claim.

You can buy this cover if…

  • Your vehicle is under 7 years of age and less than 70,000 miles at the start of cover,
  • You purchased your vehicle from a franchised motor dealer, either directly or via an internet broker, or leasing company.
  • Cover is purchased within 30 days of vehicle delivery,
  • You reside in the United Kingdom including Isle of Man or Channel Islands,
  • Your vehicle invoice price did not exceed £125,000 at time of purchase,
  • Your vehicle is listed in the Glass’s Guide and principally used in the UK,
  • You are not buying this policy to make a claim on pre-existing damage,
  • You have read the eligibility and policy Terms and Conditions.

You can’t buy this cover if…

  • Your vehicle is used for competition, road racing, pace making or off road use,
  • Your vehicle is used as an emergency service vehicle, heavy goods vehicle or mini-buses over 19 seats,
  • Your vehicle has been modified from the Manufacturer’s specification without your motor insurers agreement,
  • You have purchased, financed or leased a commercial vehicle or van with a carrying capacity over 1750kg,
  • The following vehicles are not covered; Taxi’s, Driving School Tuition Vehicles, Minicabs, any vehicle not listed in Glasses Guide and kit cars.

Significant Exclusions.

This policy does not cover….

  1. You cannot make a claim in the first 14 days of the policy,
  2. There is an excess payable of £10 per claim,
  3. Scratch and Dent cover is not renewable,
  4. Scratch and Dent Insurance is not transferable to another person or vehicle,
  5. £20 cancellation fee applies (beyond the 30 day cooling off period). Policies can only be cancelled where no claims have been made.
